Silly Welcome Picnic message from your webmaster

February 22, 2014, by , posted in Blog

Art by Harada Miyuki on Pixiv.

If your webmaster may be a little more serious for a moment, he’d like to briefly share with you what this club means to him, and how it has made his time at UTS that much more special. For those new members, its an excuse to shamelessly advertise what you’ve become a part of.

Here he goes

This is my sixth semester as an [email protected] member. I’ve lost count of how many Orientation Welcome Picnics I’ve been a part of, but certainly today’s was the largest. In previous years, we were able to form our introduction circles in the concourse of the tower building; this year we filled out half the courtyard outside. So massive was the turnout, we could barely hear each other over the distance!

I met so many of you today for the first time, and I caught up with an equal number of you. Hearing where you’re from, what you’re interested in, your own adventures and how you wound up spending time with us for lunch and games on that surprisingly nice day was wonderful. We really have a diverse group of people, from places as disparate as Latvia, Korea, Singapore, and Parramatta!

I’ll admit, behind my over-compensating, guy–wearing–a–pink–bag exterior, I’m a terribly shy introvert who’d sooner marathon an anime, Kindle a book or program a computer than spend extended periods of time with other people. I can chat with friends just fine, but in public with people I’ve never met, I’m secretly trembling inside. I know many of you are in the same boat as me.

But that’s what I believe sets [email protected] apart from any other I’ve been a part of, and of UTS in general. Well, other than JASS or the Drawing Circle, but I don’t like to discuss the latter because their talent just makes me feel inadequate!

It comes down to who we are

The Statue of Liberty greeted American immigrants with “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”. [email protected] takes it one step further; we greet the socially awkward, the yaoi and yuri fans, the genderbenders and crossdressers, the fans of moeblob or video games come to life or highschools overrun with zombies. We have dinner, butcher songs at Karaoke, play games, sometimes we even watch anime. We have artists, law students, engineers, writers, software developers, businesspeople, those taking international studies.

Forgive me for this line, but what this club offers isn’t just a refuge to share in your hobbies that others may give you weird looks for; it’s a place where you can be yourself. To let your social guard down you wear during the rest of your day, have fun, and celebrate this unique, utterly inexplicable and fabulously wonderful culture. Desu~

When I first started uni, I heard all the talk about how joining clubs was a “great place to network and meet people”. Just as the funniest jokes are often the ones with kernels of truth, so to are the clichés. Of all the lasting friendships I’ve made at UTS over these three years, almost all are people I met through this club. To think I was almost not a member until our screenings director signed me up, how different would my life be now?

So, where was I going with this? If you’re a new member, come to our events and screenings, and get to know us. Better still, let us get to know you. It may just be among the most rewarding experiences you’ll have at uni, with friends you’ll keep for many years to come.

For those still on the fence or couldn’t make it to our Orientation Day stall, you can still register at any time by visiting one of our events. More information will be posted in the event box at the top of the blog.

When MariaDB gets all tsundere

Shana goes HMMMMM

Hello club members! Over the coming days, your humble second term webmaster will be unfurling the new site design and back end. Developed with Kiri, it will be bolder and more interesting than the current theme, along with a few new features I hope will make the site more awesome for all ^_^.

As part of a behind the scenes look into the Daily Lives of Webmasters (and Webmistresses), I thought I’d share a local issue I had, and the solution so absurdly simple it’d make any other webmaster and sysadmin enter hammerspace to retrieve a weapon to beat me senseless with. Alex knows what I’m talking about.

It’s not like I wanted you to start, or anything

I’d been rebuilding my local (and increasingly misnamed) LAMP stack on my MacBook Air to test prior to deployment. The world seems to be moving to MariaDB for reasons that are beyond the scope of this post, so rather than updating MySQL I figured I’d give it a shot.

The following errors in the log file said OH NO YOU DON’T.

140208 21:39:37 mysqld_safe mysqld from pid file /usr/local/var/mysql/ ended
140208 21:39:47 mysqld_safe Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /usr/local/var/mysql
140208 21:39:47 InnoDB: The InnoDB memory heap is disabled
140208 21:39:47 InnoDB: Mutexes and rw_locks use GCC atomic builtins
140208 21:39:47 InnoDB: Compressed tables use zlib 1.2.5
140208 21:39:47 InnoDB: Initializing buffer pool, size = 128.0M
140208 21:39:47 InnoDB: Completed initialization of buffer pool
InnoDB: Error: log file ./ib_logfile0 is of different size 0 50331648 bytes
InnoDB: than specified in the .cnf file 0 5242880 bytes!
140208 21:39:47 [ERROR] Plugin 'InnoDB' init function returned error.
140208 21:39:47 [ERROR] Plugin 'InnoDB' registration as a STORAGE ENGINE failed.
140208 21:39:47 [ERROR] Unknown/unsupported storage engine: InnoDB
140208 21:39:47 [ERROR] Aborting

140208 21:39:47 [Note] /usr/local/Cellar/mariadb/5.5.35/bin/mysqld: Shutdown complete

Well darn, I said, as I stroked my non existent beard. Frank would do that better than me.

The problem, as is perennially the case, existed between my keyboard and chair. In the process of uninstalling MySQL and installing MariaDB, I’d failed to remove MySQL’s logfiles which differed in size to what MariaDB was expecting.

Removing these logfiles solved the issue. Once removed, MariaDB was able to recreate them to its taste:

% rm /usr/local/var/mysql/ib_logfile*
% echo Everybody's Heard that The Bird is The Word
% echo Desu

What does this have to with anime? Baka, it’s everything! Which means, I got nothing. Happy Saturday!

Orientation 2013 is approaching!

February 15, 2013, by , posted in News

A new year, a new semester, a new website! Welcome to the revamped version of the [email protected] website and we’re glad to have you back with us! (You’re still there, right?)

A new semester brings a new Orientation and this semester’s Clubs Day details are just below:

Date: Wednesday, 20th February 2013
Time: 9AM to around 5PM
Membership: $5 only!
Location: UTS Foodcourt

Don’t forget to pay us a visit! There’ll be the chance to win prizes in our raffle and for additional fun, you can dress up in cosplay on the day if you wish! (Don’t worry, you won’t be alone.)

If you can’t make it on the 20th though, don’t worry, there’ll still be opportunities for you to join at our events. Or if you’re free on February 24, come along to our Orientation Picnic. :)

Not only that, but this year, we have some awesome plastic cards for you! See the preview below, you won’t be disappointed!

Existing members, don’t forget you’ll have to come renew your membership for this year. :)

Don’t spill the paint!

Lots and Lots of Boxes!

If you’ll kindly step over those paint cans and sawdust… noooooo, don’t knock them over!!!!

Over the coming days, you’ll probably see some errors as we change the website over to the new system. After months of consulting with our members, we have a pretty good idea of the kinds of things you all want to see, as well as the information you’ve said was hard to find before. We hope all these things have been fixed, and made more awesome!

Markup has been repaired, databases backed up, fresh installs started, frankly all these paint fumes are making us dizzy. Yet excited. Dizzy and excited! At the same time, we’ve painstakingly preserved all the previous material (and even imported some older stuff!) so current and future generations of members can explore all that has made this club so unique and memorable for so many people over the years.

We have some exciting ideas in store for the site this year, which we’ll be gradually rolling out. In the meantime, stay tuned ^_^

Relaxing Porco Piano for your Music Monday evening!

September 17, 2012, by , posted in Features, Music

When your humble blogger here wrote (no wait, typed!) his last Music Monday post about one of the themes from InuYasha, fellow club member Kirishima was so happy to have some classic anime here again, we’ve decided to dedicate more posts to this time period in Japanese animation! Well, the music in this time period of Japanese animation. With this in mind, let’s explore this rather nostalgic (and porky) tune.
