Going green

October 14, 2014, by , posted in Admin

Good news everyone! I have developed a ecologically friendly website for you to use. Flat design is all the rage these days, and as an anime fans we really do like flatness, so I decided to implement all the current practices of good design in this new theme I call: Anime Valley.

Whats different? Well for one we have a new section – Gaming. There you can find links to our group on steam and info on how to find our chat room in LoL. Then the about page has been updated with mini cards of each exec. The sponsors page is up to date with information about our partnerships and the offers you are able to get from each. The omake section has been updated with all the art of the past year or so; go check it out, its pretty.

Finally one of the biggest changes is the emphasis on history. The previous webmaster Ruby has done an amazing job on fixing up the database and making sure all the posts from back in 2010 are still accessible. To further continue the idea of having a place to store memories of the club, I have revived the anime@uts Flickr account! It has photos of all the recent events, all the way back to 2010, and I will continue to hunt down the photographers of earlier generations and ask them to donate the photos to our club history book.

So please enjoy the new website and visit our Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, & YouTube by clicking on the respective links on the top of the navigation bar.

Bad Anime Spotlight – The Cosmopolitan Prayers

May 30, 2014, by , posted in Blog

I said I’ll try to post here on a weekly basis but hah! That was like a massive lie.  There are many subject matters I want to write about but frankly they’re things I don’t want associated with my username. Just seek me out in real life and I’ll talk about it. Anyway, I’ll write an opinion piece I guess.

One of my hobbies is bad anime. When I go “bad anime”, I don’t mean anime I view as subjectively bad. After all, just because I may not like the plot, over-moe, fan service, characterization and such of an anime, it doesn’t mean it’s bad. This sporadic writing piece isn’t about that.  This isn’t about the common complaint that “anime was much better in the (decade of your choice)” either. Bad Anime Spotlight will be about anime that is so bad that the majority of the internet can’t help but agree that it’s bad.

First one on the list is Cosprayers.

What is Cosprayers?  “The Cosmopolitan Prayers” (informally called “Cosprayers”) was a 2004 anime produced by Imagin and Studio Live and directed by Takeo Takahashi. It ran for 8 episodes that lasted for 13 minutes and is part of a distantly related trilogy with Hit o Nerae! (the main character is the in-universe producer of Cosprayers) and Love Live? (the main character is the in-universe writer of Cosprayers).

History That – Danbo!

May 16, 2014, by , posted in History

So like, I haven’t been posting because assignments have been killing me, just like they have been killing all of us. Also the tiny little fact I would have written about a kinda infamous 1987 tentacle porn and it’s rise to infamy. Maybe I’ll write about it later. However, I will write about something that is actually relevant to the club for once.

We’re building a giant Danbo tomorrow! Now what is Danbo?

Danbo was actually a character’s costume.

In the manga Yotsuba&, one of the younger characters creates a robot costume out of cardboard for her school project. Yotsuba is only four and she becomes convinced that Danbo is an actual working robot. And that’s about it really.

Sorry about the short post but good luck on all your assignments!

History That – Hannya

May 1, 2014, by , posted in History

So I’m still doing assignments. WHOOOO! So I’m writing this up with around 15 minutes of writing and research. Double whooo! What is quality control? I guess I’ll just write about Hannya.

What is Hannya?

Well firstly, Hannya is a type of mask used in Noh plays (though that is not it’s sole purpose). Hannya masks belong to the vengeful spirit category of masks.  The primary characteristics of this mask are the two horns, open mouth and angry eyes.

History That – Ningyo

April 24, 2014, by , posted in History

Dying. Assignments. They kill me. So this will just be a very short, tiny, HEY MA I WROTE THIS IN FIFTEEN MINUTES post about ningyo.

The term “Ningyo (人魚 (にんぎょ)” is often translated into and applied towards “Mermaids”. These Japanese “mermaids” once didn’t resemble, in appearance, their European counterparts of half woman/half fish people though. A “Ningyo”, which does translate into human-fish, was a more often than a fish with a human face/head/monkey head/a variety of appearances which highlighted it’s grotesqueness. While it does seem like semantics, unlike the mermaid, the grotesqueness of the ningyo was what was emphasized.
