In less formal news, one of my favourite bands, GARNiDELiA, probably best known for their performance of the second Kill la Kill opening, ambiguous, have released a new song on Nico Nico called 桃源恋歌 (Tougen Renka). Why is this news, you ask? Good question! GARNiDELiA has a long history of collaborating with Nico Nico dancers Miume and 217 to produce dances to help promote their new songs, and this is now the fifth in their series! I strongly recommend you check them out, they’re really really good! Especially if you’re as much a sucker for idol dances as me, these are a really interesting take on the genre, and I’m so in love with 217~ Check out Tougen Renga on YouTube or Nico Nico, and take a squiz through the older ones if the urge takes you.

It’s a get-to-know-the-new-execs special! Here’s a little blurb from each of them about their favourite anime~

Jamie

It’s really hard for me to say which anime is my favourite as there are so many options, although I feel like this goes for a lot of people. If I had to pick one though it would most likely be Samurai Champloo which was directed by Shinichiro Watanabe (the same guy behind Cowboy Bebop and Kids on the Slope, both of these I highly recommend as well). Samurai Champloo takes place in the Edo period of Japanese history and follows the three main characters Mugen, Jin and Fuu as they journey across Japan in order to find the samurai who smells of sunflowers. I highly recommend this anime if you haven’t seen it already, the animation and music quality is amazing and the story perfectly balances the banter between the characters but still shows plenty of serious moments. There are 26 episodes total and its available in dub and sub, for this one I recommend dub as the voice acting is incredibly well done.

Ahn

Favourite anime: Haré+Guu. Why: To take a break from all the mainstream animes, I recommend this quirky, adventure anime of a boy whose life is changed by a really pale girl, who has a two people living inside a world in her stomach and has inhuman powers.

Yukari

Steins;Gate is a scientific action adventure about an eccentric self-proclaimed “mad scientist” with a severe case of chuunibyou, and his group of pals which include a skilled hacker, a magnificent trap and a few Akiba maids. The story follows how he and his group accidentally invent a machine that can send emails to the past, thus altering events which have already passed. This is obviously followed by a stream of rather severe consequences, which you would need to watch to find out. What I like about this anime is that it tackles some really mature topics with many vibrant and likeable characters. Nobody in this anime is perfect, and it portrays each character’s hidden insecurities in unique ways. There are also some damn great plot twists. I’d recommend anyone to watch it!

Steven

Horimiya is a cute slice of life manga that is just a feel good read. Kyouko Hori, is your typical friendly and smart high schooler but hides a hardworking side as she cares for her brother and looks after the home as her parents are constantly away due to work. Whereas, Izumi Miyamura seems like a brooding, glasses wearing otaku but in actual fact is a very gentle person and is bad at studying. He also has piercings hidden under his long hair and tattoos on his back and arm. The manga has comedy, romance and the usual cute nekomimi/chibi side chapters that make you love the characters even more. If you love your romcom and relatable, cute characters give Horimiya a read. -10/10

Bit

Following the finale of major series such as Bleach and Naruto, a new gen of manga is cast into wild in expectations of achieving their former glory. One manga with such potential goes by the name of Yakusoku no Neverland (The Promised Neverland) serialised jn 2016 by Posuka Demizu and Kaiu Shirai. Emma, a happy go lucky girl, lives in complete bliss with other orphans playing tag and eating delicious food. However, not all is as it seems in Grace Field orphanage.. and shit hits the fan. Suddenly, the manga is transformed into a dystopian struggle to escape the orphanage. The crux of YnN is definitely its major twists; if you enjoyed series such as Doubt, this vicious survival game will please you. Every chapter brings fresh developments, twists and insight into characterization. Overall, it has massive potential to be much more and judging by the first chapters, we may have just discovered a hidden gem in the ground.

I hope you all like our new team’s taste~ I know I do!

See you next month (read – AT CAMP)!

Fudanshi extraordinaire,

Matt
