Music Monday – Ishida Yamato from Digimon Adventure
Now, most of us probably know that the first Digimon Tri movie, Saikai was released recently. And most of us probably know that Digimon music has a long-standing reputation of being brilliant. So, to celebrate, I want to highlight one particular gem that was lost to the annals of Digi-history and take a brief look at what may be awaiting us in the not-to-distant Digi-future. Here we go!
Quick fact spiel – one of the main characters, Ishida Yamato/Matt, joined a band in the second season. He is still in a band (although not the same one) in the new movies. Thus, we expect a certain standard of his character songs – one that his original seiyuu, Kazama Yuuta, absolutely lived up to in the above song: Negai Kanaeru Kagi. Great vocals for a non-professional singer, combined with the catchy writing and fun instrumentation that’s made Digimon music famous. In terms of character songs, for me, this is a jewel in the crown, doubly so considering the show is not music-oriented nor the singer professional.
Now, where is Yamato headed? Given Digimon’s long history with character songs, I think it’s fair to expect a full set to come out of these movies. And fortunately, Yamato’s new seiyuu, Yoshimasa Hosoya has done his share of singing. He stars in everyone’s favourite trash heap, High School Star Musical, and although those songs aren’t allowed on YouTube due to copyright restrictions, Ashita e no Last Race, his character song as Yamazaki Sosuke from the infamous Free! Eternal Summer still survives!
He certainly has potential – and I really enjoyed his performance as Yamato in the movie so fingers crossed he gets a chance to show what he can do! So, keep your eyes peeled and your ears to the ground for any signs of new Digimon music. It’s pretty much a sure-fire hit.
